Family of the Spirit Cookbook: Recipes and Remembrances from African-American Kitchens
Published in Paperback by Amistad Press (22 May, 2001)
Average review score:

FANTASTIC! My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner.I *LOVE* this book. It is very warmly written, and filled with both recipes and reminiscences from some of the country's finest cooks, all of whom are African-American. It introduces each person (complete with a picture), tells a little of their culinary background -- and then their favorite recipes, with memories of how they'd acquired them and why they were so special. The book is as wonderful to read as it is to cook from.
Two of the people described are well-known: Verta Mae Smart-Grosvenor (who used to host my favorite cooking show on PBS; I still miss it, and own and lover her own cookbooks), and Leah Chase (owner of the famous Dooky Chase restaurant in New Orleans, and author of highly-regarded cookbooks).

Felicity's Cookbook: A Peek at Dining in the Past With Meals You Can Cook Today (American Girls Collection)
Published in Paperback by Pleasant Company Publications (September, 1994)
Average review score:

Good but SimpleAs an experienced cook, I found the recipes in this book to be somewhat simplistic. However, since it was intented for children, I believe that the basic text and detailed instructions included are forgiveable. My family has found several favorites among these recipes, and every dish we've tried has come out well. Most other children's cookery books tend to focus so much on cooking techniques that the actual recipe is forgotten. I found that not to be the case here. Kid's can have fun both making these dishes, and eating the product of their labors. The historical facts about our War for Independance included are also interesting. I would definitely give this book an A+, in the veiw of both teacher and practical cook.

Fifty Years a Country Doctor
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nebraska Pr (August, 1998)
Average review score:

Absolutely HilariousI wasn't looking for humor per se when I got this. I thought this might be a little glimpse into years gone by and some shrewd cowboy psychology or something - and to some extent, it is that as well. I found myself laughing a lot at some of the stories, despite Cooks attempt to handle some of the topics with "discretion". Great look at a different time and a different mentality. Can't think of a doctor I wouldn't recommend it to - they might learn something!

Fishcamp : Life on an Alaskan Shore
Published in Hardcover by Shearwater books (May, 1997)
Average review score:

Travel to Alaska for under $30. Read this book.I'm an admitted sucker for nature writing and natural history, but am often disappointed in what I find out there. Not so with Fishcamp. This is that one-in-a-thousand book that I've longed for since first reading Walden twenty years ago. Ms. Lord writes beautifully of her day-to-day life fishing with her partner on Cook Inlet. And the stories and legends of the Dena'ina people, as well as the lives of the fishermen who have come before, will not be easily forgotten. This is not sentimental philosophizing about summers in Alaska. It is clear, respectful, and humble writing that will, I hope, be read for years to come

Thorough and descriptive...This book is extremely beneficial for those who desire to follow the iconographic depictions of Francis in artwork. This book thoroughly describes the images of Francis found in the United States. I highly recommend this for lay students as well as seasoned scholars alike.

Awsome N'Awlins CookingBeing close to New Orleans, I have seen the author on local cooking shows. The Shrimp and Okra Gumbo in this book is one of the best ever..when I prepare it, as I do every year at Christmas, everyone wants the recipe. The other recipes are just as good..

French Cooking for Beginners: 75 Recipes for the Eager Cook (Ethnic Kitchen)
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (January, 1994)
Average review score:

Authentic and wonderfulI have owned French Cooking for Beginners for several years and have prepared almost every recipe in it except for a few desserts. The dishes are authentic yet without all the mystery usually associated with French cooking. The directions are clear, the ingredients readily available, and the results outstanding. I like this book so much that I came to Amazon.com for the first time ever to look for more cookbooks by Helene Siegel. The lovely dustjacket and inside graphics are a bonus.

French Regional Cooking (Look & Cook Series)

French Regional CookingIf there were six stars in the rating system, French Regional Cooking would take them all.
Want to make the perfect Tarte Des Demoiselles Tatin? It's here! Coq au vin? Oui!
The recipes are easy to follow and the most authentic that I have ever used.
Anne Willan writes wonderfully well and her recipes will never let the user down. If there is a fault with the book, it is that Mme. Willan assumes that the reader is not a beginner in the kitchen.
And who said the English can't cook?
